Winter Magic in Budapest

First Time Experiencing Christmas Markets in Budapest

I went to Budapest for the first time for my long-awaited Christmas market trip – and it was truly magical. Visiting authentic Christmas markets in Europe had been one of my biggest dreams for years. I’d always imagined strolling through fairy-lit squares, hearing festive carols, and warming up with a cup of mulled wine.

Last winter, that dream finally came true.

We spent the first week of December travelling through Budapest, Vienna, and Prague – all by train! Most Christmas markets open around the last week of November, so visiting in early December is perfect to soak up the festive atmosphere before it gets too crowded.

This post is all about our first stop, Budapest – the beautiful capital of Hungary, famous for its thermal baths, grand architecture, and romantic views along the Danube River.

My Surprise Stay at W Budapest (for Free!)

I secretly booked W Budapest for two nights as a little surprise – and it turned out even better than expected.

Thanks to my Marriott Bonvoy credit card, it was actually a free stay, including breakfast for two and a late 4 p.m. checkout – both Platinum member benefits. We even got a lovely upgrade to a larger room!

The hotel itself was absolutely stunning – modern, elegant, and full of stylish details. The breakfast was a mix of buffet and à la carte, and they served freshly made egg dishes, coffee, and even matcha lattes. Such a perfect way to start the day!

They also had a guest-only spa, which I completely fell in love with – calm atmosphere, beautiful design, with sauna and steam room.

After we came back from the spa, the staff surprised us with a small cake in our room – such a sweet gesture that made our stay even more special.

If you’re visiting Budapest and looking for a stay that combines luxury, comfort, and thoughtful service, W Budapest is definitely worth checking out.

💡 Curious about how to get free hotel stays and upgrades like this?

For this trip, I used my Marriott Bonvoy Credit Card (originally from Japan), which offers amazing travel perks – including free nights and room upgrades at Marriott hotels like The Ritz-Carlton and W Hotels.

It does have an annual fee, but the benefits easily outweigh the cost – I’ve even used the points to book a free flight from Japan to the UK!

Now that I live in the UK, I also use the British Airways American Express® Credit Card, which is free to join and lets you collect Avios points for flights and travel rewards.

👉 Here’s my referral link if you’d like to check it out!
Right now, you can get 15,000 bonus Avios (usually 6,000) just for signing up and meeting the spending requirement.
Terms and conditions apply.

It’s a great way to start earning points towards your next holiday! ✈️

The Best Christmas Markets in Budapest

Budapest has several Christmas markets, but my absolute favourite was the one at St. Stephen’s Square, right in front of the Basilica.

It has a completely different vibe in the daytime and at night, so I’d really recommend visiting twice.

At night, the Basilica’s façade lights up with beautiful projection mapping, and Christmas music echoes around the square – it feels absolutely magical.

Must-Try Christmas Foods

Chimney Cake (Kürtőskalács) – a sweet, spiral-shaped pastry coated in sugar and cinnamon. It’s so addictive when it’s warm!

You’ll find lots of varieties at the Christmas markets – some with cream toppings or pistachio coating – but my favourite was the simple, freshly baked one straight from the stall.

You can choose flavours like vanilla, walnut, cinnamon, or coconut, and honestly, they all smell amazing!

Goulash Soup – Hungary’s classic, hearty soup made with paprika and tender beef.

Perfect for a chilly evening at the Christmas market! Some stalls even serve it in a hollowed-out bread bowl, which keeps it warm and adds extra flavour.

Lángos – One of Hungary’s most loved street foods! It’s a fried flatbread that usually comes with toppings like sour cream, cheese, and garlic – but you can also find versions with ham, sausages, or even sweet ones with Nutella.

We had ours at Retro Lángos, a super popular local spot (not inside the market). There was a short queue, but it moved fast, and the portion was huge – perfect for sharing (and best enjoyed with a beer).

Magical Sights Around the City

While exploring Budapest in December, every corner of the city felt magical.
Here are three of my favourite view spots that made me fall in love with this city even more.

1. St. Stephen’s Basilica

If you visit St. Stephen’s Basilica, don’t just admire it from the outside – step inside!
The interior is absolutely breathtaking, with golden details and a calm, sacred atmosphere that makes you want to pause for a moment.

2. The Views from the Bridges over the Danube

The views from the bridges were another highlight.

We crossed one early in the morning on our way to the Buda side, and the calm river under the soft winter light felt so peaceful.

But if you can, make sure to come back at sunset – the whole city lights up beautifully, and the night view is simply unforgettable.

Now I truly understand why Budapest is called “The Pearl of the Danube.”

3. Fisherman’s Bastion & Buda Castle Hill

From Fisherman’s Bastion and Buda Castle Hill (Budai Várnegyed), you’ll get another incredible panoramic view – it’s one of the best spots to see both sides of Budapest, with the Chain Bridge and Parliament.
We even spotted a bright red balloon floating in the sky – such a magical little moment! 🎈

I was also blown away by how stunning the architecture of Fisherman’s Bastion was. The whole area had such a charming, almost fairytale-like atmosphere, and I absolutely loved the vibe up on Castle Hill.

We even found a small, cozy Christmas market near Matthias Church by chance – much quieter than the big ones in the city centre, with a lovely local vibe.

And if you have time for another festive stop, the Vörösmarty Square Christmas Market is perfect for a quick visit while exploring downtown.

It’s lively and modern, with a giant Christmas tree and local craft stalls – right in the heart of Budapest.

If you’re wandering near the Ritz-Carlton, the nearby streets are beautifully decorated with Christmas lights and sparkling shop windows, making it the perfect place for an evening stroll.

Local Food You Shouldn’t Miss

We had a delicious dinner at Parasztkonyha Restaurant, a cozy Hungarian spot with rustic decor and a warm atmosphere.

The Paprika Chicken and Goulash Soup were both incredible – rich, comforting, and full of flavour.

The restaurant had the cutest Hungarian-style interior, and the staff were really kind and attentive.

Their menu comes with photos, so even if it’s your first time trying Hungarian food, it’s super easy to choose – I’d definitely recommend this place for first-time visitors!

Final Thoughts: Christmas Market Trip in Budapest

Honestly, I didn’t want to leave.

Two nights in Budapest felt way too short – there’s just so much to see, eat, and experience during the Christmas season.

The Christmas markets alone were magical, but what truly impressed me was how beautiful the city itself is. From the grand architecture to the stunning view of the Danube River, every corner felt picture-perfect.

We didn’t visit the famous thermal baths this time, but the spa at our hotel was perfect for relaxing and warming up after a chilly day outside.

Budapest truly exceeded my expectations – it’s a city that combines elegance, warmth, and festive charm in every corner.

I can’t wait to go back someday… maybe next Christmas! 🎄

Coming Up Next

Stay tuned for my next posts about Vienna and Prague, the other two cities from our Christmas train trip across Europe!

In the meantime, you can check out my winter escape to Chamonix, France – it was another magical European snow experience! [here ➡️]
