If you live in the UK, Cornwall is one of those places you absolutely have to visit at least once.

It’s one of the country’s most beloved summer destinations, known for its clear turquoise waters, dramatic cliffs, and relaxed seaside towns.

I visited St Ives in mid-August – the sun was out, the town was buzzing, and even though the sea was way too cold for me to swim (how do people do it?!), it was the perfect British seaside experience.

🏖️Why St Ives Is a Must-Visit in Cornwall

Located on Cornwall’s southern coast, St Ives is famous for its golden beaches, art galleries, and coastal walks that stretch endlessly along the cliffs.

The town has a laid-back charm – small, cozy, and full of life. You can stroll along the harbour, watch the fishing boats come and go, stop for fish & chips, and enjoy a slower rhythm of seaside life.

1. Try the Real Fish & Chips by the Sea

Seafood is a must in St Ives – and fish & chips here are one of the best British foods you can try by the sea.
I’ve often heard that fish & chips taste better at the seaside than in the city, and I have to agree – they’re tastier, fresher, and usually cheaper too!

Many restaurants let you choose your fish – cod, haddock, sea bass, hake, lemon sole, or mackerel.
I went for the grilled sea bass and chips at Harbour Fish & Chips, and it was perfectly cooked and full of flavour. The portion was generous – just what you need after a long coastal walk.

Another day, I tried a mussel chowder filled with fresh local mussels – hearty and comforting after a day outdoors.
Cornwall’s seafood really does taste different when you’re right by the water.

2. Eat a Cornish Pasty in Cornwall

If there’s one thing you can’t leave Cornwall without trying, it’s a Cornish pasty – a traditional baked pastry filled with beef, potato, onion, and turnip, wrapped in a golden, crimped crust.
It’s said to have originated as a portable meal for miners, but now it’s an icon of Cornish cuisine.

There are bakeries everywhere in St Ives, but I especially liked The Cornish Bakery.
I’d had their scone on a previous trip and loved it – so this time I went back for their Cornish pasty and a sweet pastry with coffee.

The atmosphere is lovely – light, welcoming, and filled with that irresistible smell of freshly baked pastry.
It’s the perfect stop for a slow morning before heading out to explore the town.

3. Go on a Coastal Walk – It’s Breathtaking

The coastal walk from St Ives to Zennor is one of the most stunning trails I’ve ever done.
It takes about 3-4 hours one way, following the South West Coast Path along cliffs with sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean.

The path can get narrow and rugged at times – there were moments I wondered if I was still on the right track – but every time I passed another hiker, it felt reassuring.
And the views… absolutely worth it. The deep blue sea, the dramatic cliffs, the sound of waves far below – pure nature.

I spotted Seal Island in the distance, and by the time I reached Zennor, I stopped at The Tinners Arms, a cozy pub that felt like a reward after the hike.
I even treated myself to an ice cream before catching the bus back to St Ives – tired but completely content.

The route I followed was similar to this one on iWalkCornwall – a perfect trail to enjoy Cornwall’s dramatic coastline.
I finished in Zennor and took the bus back, but if you have more energy, you can continue walking all the way back to St Ives.

💡 Tip: There are no shops or cafés along the way, so bring plenty of water and snacks.
It’s not a route you can easily cut short, so take your time and enjoy the scenery fully.

If you prefer a shorter coastal walk, just heading towards Mans Head from St Ives gives you a taste of those same incredible views – perfect if you’re short on time.

4. Spend Time at the Beach

St Ives has several beautiful beaches, each with its own personality:

  • Porthmeor Beach – popular for surfing and bodyboarding.
  • Porthminster Beach – soft sand and calm waves, great for families.
  • Carbis Bay Beach – my personal favourite, peaceful and perfect for relaxing. It’s a little quieter than the main beaches, with calm turquoise water – perfect for an afternoon picnic or simply soaking in the views.

Even if you don’t swim, the colour of the sea and the atmosphere make it worth spending hours there.

5. Take a Boat Tour to See Seals

One of the most popular activities in St Ives is the seal-spotting boat tour.
Boats depart directly from the harbour and take you along the coast to Seal Island, where you can often see groups of seals resting on the rocks.

The ride is around one hour, with beautiful coastal views along the way – and it’s suitable for all ages.
Several local companies operate from the harbour, and you can usually book right on the spot.
Or, for convenience, you can also book online through sites like St Ives Boats.

🌻 Final Thoughts: Why Cornwall Stays With You

Cornwall has this special energy – it’s calm yet full of life.

Between the sea air, the scenery, and the friendly local vibe, it’s a place that lingers in your memory long after you leave.

If you’re looking for a summer destination in the UK with beautiful beaches and unforgettable coastal walks, St Ives, Cornwall should be at the top of your list.

And if you love coastal hikes as much as I do, don’t miss Stonehaven in Scotland – another charming seaside town with stunning coastal views on the way to Edinburgh.
