The best place to live in the U.K.
That’s the phrase I kept searching for, and Bristol kept coming up. Sounds a bit crazy, right? When I decided to move to the U.K., I had no idea which city to choose—I just knew London wasn’t for me. As exciting as it is, I wanted somewhere smaller, with a more relaxed vibe and easy access to nature. Every time I searched “The best place to live in the U.K.,” Bristol lingered in my mind. At first, I thought, “Where even is Bristol? What kind of city is it?” But after more than six months here, I know I made the right choice.
What I Love About Bristol
Bristol is a historic port city in southwest England, just under two hours by train from London. With its stunning harbour views, colorful buildings, and world-renowned street art (it’s even the hometown of Banksy!), this city blends history with modern creativity. The presence of the esteemed University of Bristol brings a youthful, energetic vibe, making the city both vibrant and laid-back.
Here are three reasons why, in my opinion, Bristol is the best city to live in the U.K.:
1. Close to Nature
One of the things I love most about Bristol is how easy it is to escape into nature. Imagine strolling to a massive park in just 10 minutes, where you can relax, read a book, or enjoy a picnic. At Ashton Court Estate, you might even spot deer roaming freely! A short drive or bus ride takes you past rolling fields dotted with sheep, cows, and horses.
In today’s fast-paced, screen-filled world, having nature on your doorstep is a real luxury. Parks here feel more open, green, and wild compared to those in Japan, and I love that I can feel so connected to nature without leaving the city.
2. The Perfect Compact City
One of the best things about Bristol is that it’s compact and easy to get around. You rarely need to take a train—most places are just a walk, bike ride, or quick bus trip away. This makes daily life feel effortless, with less time spent commuting and more time enjoying the city’s charm.
Whether it’s cozy pubs, buzzing restaurants, or spontaneous live music performances, Bristol has a thriving local scene without the hectic, overwhelming feel of a big city. It’s got just the right balance—urban convenience with a relaxed, friendly atmosphere.
3. Easy Travel Connections
Bristol is a dream for travel lovers. With quick train or bus rides to London and its prime location in southwest England, it’s the perfect base for exploring Wales, Cornwall, and the idyllic Cotswolds—all within easy reach.
Plus, having Bristol Airport just 15 minutes from my home makes last-minute getaways effortless. Whether I’m traveling across the U.K. or hopping on a flight to Europe, Bristol makes it easy to indulge my love for adventure.
Living in Bristol: My Experience So Far
After living here for over six months, I can confidently say Bristol strikes the right balance between urban convenience and a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere. It also offers a more affordable lifestyle compared to London, though rents have been creeping up as more Londoners move in. Still, the city retains its charm, with friendly locals, creative energy, and plenty of green spaces to escape to.
Whether you’re a nature lover, a culture seeker, or someone who enjoys exploring a vibrant yet compact city, Bristol has something for everyone. I’m excited to keep sharing my adventures and the unique charm of this incredible place with you!
